Marking out and measuring
Mark out and then measure the area that it to be covered this will give you how much grass is required.
Remove old grass with turf cutter or by hand, then compact the ground with vibrating plate ready to take the timber edge.
Ground preparation
Once the ground is prepared apply the timber to the perimeter of the project area and secure using wooden pegs hammered into the ground.
Lay the geo textile weed membrane inside the timber edge frame
Fill the frame with sharp sand or crushed limestone and compact using vibrating plate, ensuring that the sand is level with the timber after it has been compacted.
Turf installation
Roll the turf out on top of the sand – be careful not to move the base material.
Cut and trim the turf with a sharp Stanley knife or scissors
Once happy with the fit secure the turf to the timber frame using galvanised screws at no more than 300mm intervals
Once the turf is secured spread the kiln dried silica sand as evenly as possible over the turf.
This can be done with a fertiliser spreader or by hand.
The sand can then be brushed into the turf.
Joining the turf
If you are fitting a large area you will need to join the turf.
This is done in the following way.
The two pieces to be joined require cutting as close as possible to the stitching on the backside along its entire length.
Butt the two pieces of turf leaving a gap the same as the gap between the stitching on the back of the turf
Peel open the joint and place seaming tape under the joint
Apply glue in a zig zag pattern on the tape
Close the joint and apply firm pressure
Final installation
The turf is typically sand dressed in which sand is applied to the turf once fully fitted. The quantity of sand is dependent on the pile height and needs to be evenly distributed.
Installation
Tools required:
- Turf cutter
- Vibrating plate
- Hand saw
- Stanley knife
- Sweeping brush
- Hammer
- Screw driver
Materials required:
- Timber edging frame
- 2"x2"/3"x2" tantalised
- Wooden Pegs
- Sharp sand/crushed limestone
- Geo-textile weed membrane
- Kiln dried silica sand
- Glue
- Galvanised Screws
Tips
It is not essential to use a geo-textile membrane but it is recommended.
We recommend screwing the turf down with the galvanised screws, as they won't rust and the turf can be easily lifted if required.
The turf requires minimal maintenance, a light brushing to remove debris every now and then is recommended.
